October 2000 Lviv state academic opera and ballet theater
will be celebrating its 100th jubilee. The buiding of the theater - monument
of the architecture of the Õ¯Õ century, belongs to the best theater buildings
of Ukraine, whih has organicallly entered in the architectural landscape
of the city and became its significant decoration. The theater is built
in classical traditions with the use of the forms and details of the Renaissance
and baroque architecture, or in the so-called "Viennese pseudo-renaissance"
after the project of famous European architect Zigmund Gorgolevskiy.
The different time the stage of the Lviv theater became the debut place
of young Ukrainian singers - graduates of the local conservatory, like
Î.Rusnak, Î.Nosalevich, Î.Lubich-Parahonyak, Ì.Holinskiy, Å.Hushalevich,
R.Lubinetskiy, V.Êachmar, S.Fedichkovskiy, V.Florianskiy, Ì.Ñkala-Staritskiy
S.Krushelnitska, À.Didur, Î.Ìishuga, Ì.Ìentsinskiy.
Also performed Y.Êepura, D.Bellinchioni, À.Dobosh, I.Ìànn, Ì.Soletskaya,
Å.Chaplinskiy, Å.Bandrovskaya-Turskaya, Ì.Battistini.
In january 1939 with the annexation of West.Ukraine to the USSR The Large
city theater was renamed into The Lviv Theater of Opera and Ballet with
its subordination to the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine. The orchestra,
chorus, balet troupe were reorganized, among the opera soloists appeared
new names - graduates of Kyiv, Kharkhov and Odessa conservatories. For
the positions of the chief conductors were invited M.Pokrovskiy and Ì.Honcharov.
From different cities came specialists: directors, ballet-masters, painters.
Its after the war that composers from Lviv took the place at the stand-
Ì.Êîlessa and À.Soltis, came from the East of Ukraine V.Ìànziy, V.Sklyarenko,
Ì.Stephanovich, Z.Honcgarova, P.Êàrmaluk, V.Êîbrzhitskiy and others. For
the participation in separate performances came People's artists of the
USSR B.Gmyrya, Z.Gaidai, Ì.Litvinenko-Volgemut, ².Patorzhitskiy.
In the centennial since the birthday (²956) of well-known Ukrainian writer
Ivan Franko the theater got his name. And in 10 years for great success
the theater obtained the status of the Academic.
For the first time in the USSR were staged the operas "Dalibor"
by B.Smetana (²950), "Ernani" D.Verdi (²970) and the ballet
"Pan Tvardovskiy" by L.Ruzhitskiy (²958). Significant achievement
of the theater became the creation of the music-scenic Frankiana- performances
based on the works of I.Franko. The ballets "Krilo soiki" by
À.Êîs-Ànatolskiy, "Kamenschiki" by N.Skorik; operas - "Stolen
Happiness" by Y.Ìåitus. The creative event was the stage of the opera
by B.Lyatoshinskiy "Zolotoi obruch", which was marked with the
directors (conductor Y.Lutsiv, painter Å.Lisik, director D.Smolich) by
the State premium of Ukraine named after T.Shevchenko..
Classic and modern operas and ballets were also staged: "Hovanschina"
and "Boris Hodunov" by N.Ìusorgskiy, "Ivan Susanin"
by N.Glinka, "Ênyaz Ihor " by Î.Borodin, "Zakoldovanniy
zamok", "Galka" S.Ìînushko, "Dzhokonda" À.Ponkielli,
"Òangeizer" R.Vagner, the ballets "Òil Ulenshpigel "
by Å.Glebov, "Creation of the world" by À.Petrov, "Ìedea"
by R.Gabichvadze, operas by P.Chaikovsky "Åvgeniy Onegin", "Pikovaya
dama", "Ìazepa", all his ballets - "Swan lake",
"Sleeping beauty", "Nutcracker", operas by N.Rimskiy-Êîrsakov,
D.Rossini, G.Donitsetti, D.Puchchini, R.Leonkavallo, Å.Bize, ballets by
R.Glier, S.Prokofief, L.Ìinkus, À.Àdan, L.Deliba, practically all D.Verdi
opera works, "Bogema" D.Puchchini, "Rekviem" D.Verdi.
In the creative strengthening of the theater were noted conductors: People's

Lviv State academic opera and ballet theater after I.Franko is well known
in the world. Its opera and ballet performances were admired in Italy,
Àustria, Spain, Poland, and many other European countries.
The theater hosts all the most important mass-political and creative events.
In mai 1999 it became an important object of the sixth meeting of the
Central Europe Presidents in Lviv.
The silhouette of the major front are recognized as an emblem of the city,
it is also depicted on Ukrainian money- 20 Hr note.
